HOW PRONTO HIRE HELPED HEB TACKLE A TIME-CRITICAL EMERGENCY WORKS PROJECT
"If I call day or night, I know I'm going to get a response within about ten to fifteen minutes. I've never really had any downtime." - Tom, Project Manager, HEB Northern Civil Division
When a stormwater culvert collapses, there's no time to wait around for gear. For HEB's Northern Civil Division, currently running an emergency works project for Auckland Council in Rosedale, having machines that turn up fast and keep working has been central to getting the job under control.
The project sits on a stormwater retention pond in Auckland's Healthy Waters network, where a collapsed culvert triggered urgent remediation work. With a catchment this size, and a closed landfill adding to the load, the team needed equipment they could rely on from day one.
WHO IS HEB?
HEB Construction is one of New Zealand's leading civil construction companies, working across roading, bridges, drainage, and water and wastewater infrastructure throughout the country. HEB became part of the VINCI Construction International Network in 2015 and has continued to grow its infrastructure capability across the upper North Island and beyond.
Tom, project manager on HEB's Northern Civil Division, has worked across a wide range of Auckland projects, from wastewater piping for Watercare to bridge works over State Highway 1 and a bus station build in Westgate. He's currently leading the emergency response in Rosedale.
HEB's Challenge: A Fast-Moving Emergency With No Room for Delay
The Rosedale site sits within a stormwater retention pond with an enormous catchment, drawing in water from 600,000m² of roading network and surrounding housing alone. A closed landfill behind the site adds even more volume on top of that, which means even a small rain event can quickly become a big problem for the works.
"There's a lot of challenges working on a project like this," Tom says. "It's a stormwater retention pond in the Auckland Healthy Waters network, so it has an enormous catchment... even a small rain event can be quite significant for this works."
To keep the pond as dry as possible while sediment removal goes on, the team has relied on constant over-pumping. Speed mattered from the start. HEB mobilised within days of the culvert failing, bringing in a specialist amphibious excavator from Murphy Civil to lead the silt removal, backed up by three Pronto Hire machines: a 25 ton long reach excavator, a Morooka 11 ton tracked swivel dumper, and a 5 ton excavator for day-to-day site work.
The 25 ton long reach excavator became the main machine for shifting sediment out of the pond. Its extended reach let the crew move material straight from the main pond into an adjacent one, without needing a second machine to relay it across. That cut out a handling step entirely and sped up the whole cycle.
"We needed a long reach because it can get into a lot more of the sediment a lot easier," Tom says. "Rather than having to put it onto a secondary machine, we've actually been able to directly move it from one pond to another. It's reduced a lot of cycle times and improved productivity a lot."
The Morooka 11 ton tracked swivel dumper picks up where the long reach and the amphibious excavator can't quite meet, and the 5 ton excavator handles the smaller jobs and general site upkeep that keep the project moving day to day.
The Outcome: Fast Mobilisation and Machines That Don't Slow the Job Down
- Pronto Hire machines on site within days, backing up the amphibious excavator on silt removal from day one
- The 25 ton long reach excavator let the crew move sediment directly between ponds, cutting cycle times and lifting productivity
- Six years of working with Pronto Hire across multiple HEB projects, with machines that consistently show up compliant, safe, and ready for the crew to use
- Breakdown support that responds within ten to fifteen minutes, day or night, with next to no downtime on site
"I've been using Pronto for six years now across a multitude of jobs," Tom says. "I know that the machines are going to turn up. They're going to be compliant for our sites, they're going to be safe, and they're going to be comfortable for the guys to use."
This is his first time running the full 25 ton long reach excavator on a project, and it's made a noticeable difference.
"I've used Pronto machines with long reach attachments on them before, but it's a complete game changer actually having the full 25 ton long reach. There's a great relationship being built there. Very easy to deal with and very responsive."
